About the Role
We're looking for an experienced Backend Engineer to join Fearn as we build up a scalable infrastructure. You'll play a crucial role in architecting and building robust backend systems that power our platform, while mentoring junior engineers and shaping our infrastructure direction. You’ll be working out of our beautiful Noe Valley office in SF.
Key Skills
3-5 years of software engineering experience with a focus on backend development
Strong backend experience with Python
Experience in Svelte, JavaScript/TypeScript
Experience building production APIs and working with databases and distributed systems
Proven ability to design system architecture and make technical decisions
Experience with DevOps practices and tools (CI/CD, containerization, orchestration)
Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and hybrid cloud environments
Experience with monitoring, logging, and observability tools
Take total ownership - you turn ambiguous problems into momentum and see things through to impact
Thrive in small, fast-moving teams where speed and autonomy matter
Bonus
Hands-on experience with on-premise deployment and infrastructure management
Experience with scaling deployments of custom and open source models
Experience in B2B SaaS products with real time collaboration
Previous startup experience and comfort with ambiguity
About our interview process
We run an efficient and thorough interview process to ensure a good fit on both sides. That being said, we will try our best to make the process as fast as you need it to be. Please see details below:
Member of technical staff
15 min introductory chat: We will tell you a bit about Fearn, learn about you and your prior experiences, and answer any questions you might have. The goal is to assess whether or not we are aligned.
30 min technical interview: We will share a technical coding problem during a live session. We will work together on your solution to understand your thought process. Our goal is to understand your problem solving skills and how you structure your approach.
Prep: We will ask that you share your entire screen, close all unrelated apps, and close all tabs aside from the Google Meet and Docs tabs.
Reference checks: We will conduct a minimum of 2 reference checks. Be prepared to share references of prior employers, classmates, or anyone you might have worked with in the past.
Onsite: Join us in person to meet the rest of the team!
